Our History

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Pittsburgh was founded in January 1983 by Julian Falk, with support from the Jewish Community Center. From the beginning, the Society sought to help members explore and preserve their family histories, publishing the newsletter Z’chor and hosting programs throughout the community.

While activities gradually dwindled through the 2010s, the organization’s early work laid a foundation of interest and expertise in Jewish genealogy in Pittsburgh.

In 2017, Steve Jaron revived the Society, ushering in a new era of discovery. With the advent of at-home DNA testing, widespread digital records, and the power of the internet, it is now easier than ever for members to trace their ancestry and gain insight into their personal origins. Today, the Society continues to honor its roots while embracing the tools and opportunities of the modern genealogical world.
